Campanário is a traditional agricultural parish on Madeira's sunny south coast, known for its terraced hillsides, banana plantations, and proximity to two unique attractions: the Fajã dos Padres coastal plateau and the famous Cabo Girão cliff viewpoint.

Getting there and back

Where to board

Boarding reference: Funchal. Select a journey that names Campanário; check the route page for the correct direction and any branch notes. The town name alone does not identify a boarding bay.

From the stop

Use the named Campanário stop or timing point for Campanário. Plan the pedestrian leg from that point to your exact destination; the bus sheet does not give a walking distance or confirm entrance access.

The way back

Choose the last usable return on the route page before leaving. Use its dated timetable where available, otherwise its linked SIGA sheet. Match the day, direction and stop; a departure from the terminus is not a departure from your stop.

Good to know

  • Use the Campanário column, not urban route 004 (Amparo in Funchal). This is not evidence of a stop at the Fajã dos Padres cable car.
  • The bus sources name stops, but do not establish a step-free walking route or the entrance location. Check the final approach and the return boarding point before leaving the bus.

What to see in Campanário

Visit the 16th-century parish church. Take the cable car down to Fajã dos Padres for wine tasting and fresh seafood. Walk through the terraced banana and vegetable farms. The Miradouro do Campanário offers sweeping ocean views. The village maintains traditional thatched storage buildings.

Best time to visit

Year-round destination with mild south coast weather. Summer is ideal for swimming at Fajã dos Padres. The village festival in July features traditional music and food. Combine with nearby Cabo Girão for a full day trip.
