Caniço de Baixo is the sun-drenched coastal part of Caniço village. It's famous for its crystal-clear waters, the Marine Nature Reserve of Garajau, and the charming Reis Magos beach. It's the best destination for scuba diving and swimming in the ocean on the eastern coast.

Getting there and back

Where to board

Boarding reference: Funchal. Select a journey that names Ponta da Oliveira / Reis Magos (556); check the route page for the correct direction and any branch notes. The town name alone does not identify a boarding bay.

From the stop

Use the named Ponta da Oliveira / Reis Magos (556) stop or timing point for Caniço de Baixo. Plan the pedestrian leg from that point to your exact destination; the bus sheet does not give a walking distance or confirm entrance access.

The way back

Choose the last usable return on the route page before leaving. Use its dated timetable where available, otherwise its linked SIGA sheet. Match the day, direction and stop; a departure from the terminus is not a departure from your stop.

Good to know

  • Route 555 links Funchal and Ponta da Oliveira, with variants via Garajau or Figueirinhas; its sheet does not name Reis Magos. Route 556 links Reis Magos and Funchal via Garajau with one trip each way on Sundays and holidays only (no service on 25 December). Plan the final approach to your beach or hotel separately.
  • The bus sources name stops, but do not establish a step-free walking route or the entrance location. Check the final approach and the return boarding point before leaving the bus.

Arriving from the airport? The Caniço guide explains the bus change and the separate approach to your coastal hotel.

Highlights

Praia dos Reis Magos: A popular pebble beach with excellent infrastructure, including seaside bars, a promenade, and natural rock pools. It's a favorite spot for locals on hot days.

Diving & Marine Life: This area is part of the Garajau Marine Nature Reserve. The calm, clear waters make it the island's premier location for diving and snorkeling, where you can see groupers, barracudas, and rays.
