At 1,007 meters elevation, Encumeada Pass is the dramatic mountain crossroads where Madeira's central ridge allows passage between the north and south coasts. On clear days, you can see both the Atlantic on either side—a unique vantage point that makes this one of the island's most spectacular viewpoints.

Getting there and back

Where to board

Boarding reference: Funchal. Select a journey that names Encumeada; check the route page for the correct direction and any branch notes. The town name alone does not identify a boarding bay.

From the stop

Use the named Encumeada stop or timing point for Encumeada. Plan the pedestrian leg from that point to your exact destination; the bus sheet does not give a walking distance or confirm entrance access.

The way back

Choose the last usable return on the route page before leaving. Use its dated timetable where available, otherwise its linked SIGA sheet. Match the day, direction and stop; a departure from the terminus is not a departure from your stop.

Good to know

  • The pass and Túnel Encumeada are different places. The 340/341 sheet names the pass outbound but not on the return; 006 also uses the tunnel on many trips. A return from the pass must be confirmed separately.
  • The bus sources name stops, but do not establish a step-free walking route or the entrance location. Check the final approach and the return boarding point before leaving the bus.
Trail access and your return

Bus access does not establish whether a trail is accessible. Consult the official trail and reservation sources before setting out.

Choose the return transport before the walk; the route page carries the bus timetable and its source.

Visit Madeira — trail information

What to see at Encumeada

PR1.2 starts at Achada do Teixeira, not at Encumeada. Use the trailhead destination guide when planning that walk.

Best time to visit

Early morning for the clearest views before clouds build up. Spring and autumn offer the most stable weather. Winter can bring snow to the peaks—a rare sight on Madeira. Allow 2-3 hours if combining with a short levada walk.

Keep the timetables with you

Madeira Bus is free to download: the free version covers journey planning on the SIGA network and offline timetables in English, Portuguese, German and French. The offline route map is a paid premium upgrade.
