The Fanal forest is one of the oldest and most mystical places in Madeira. Home to ancient laurel trees (Til trees) that are over 500 years old, this UNESCO-protected laurisilva (laurel forest) is a photographer's and nature lover's paradise, especially when the characteristic low-lying fog rolls through.
Getting there and back
Which route
Where to board
Boarding reference: Funchal. Select a journey that names Porto Moniz; check the route page for the correct direction and any branch notes. The town name alone does not identify a boarding bay.
From the stop
Porto Moniz → Fanal. The bus reaches the named town only. Arrange a taxi or tour transfer to the destination and a pickup back to the bus stop; do not treat the remaining road as a verified walking connection.
The way back
Agree the pickup location and return transport before starting. Leave room for the road transfer before your chosen bus; a through ticket or guaranteed connection is not established. Choose the last usable return on the route page before leaving. Use its dated timetable where available, otherwise its linked SIGA sheet. Match the day, direction and stop; a departure from the terminus is not a departure from your stop.
Good to know
- Agree the pickup location and return transport before starting. Leave room for the road transfer before your chosen bus; a through ticket or guaranteed connection is not established.
- The bus sources name stops, but do not establish a step-free walking route or the entrance location. Check the final approach and the return boarding point before leaving the bus.
Best time to visit
Plan your visit around the arranged pickup and return journey. Mist is not guaranteed; the bus data does not forecast forest conditions.
Year-Round Destination: Unlike coastal areas, Fanal's high-altitude forest is beautiful all year. However, dress warmly – temperatures can be 10°C cooler than in Funchal.
Highlights
Ancient Til Trees: Some of the twisted, moss-covered laurel trees here are estimated to be over 500 years old. Their gnarled branches create an otherworldly "enchanted forest" atmosphere.
UNESCO Laurisilva: Fanal is part of Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage-listed laurisilva – a type of subtropical rainforest that once covered much of southern Europe millions of years ago.
PR13 Vereda do Fanal: A circular hiking trail (~10.8 km, moderate difficulty) takes you through the heart of the forest. The trail fee is €4,50 for non-residents (2026).
