Rabaçal is the starting area for some of Madeira's best-known hikes. From here, paths lead to the magical 25 Fontes (25 Springs) and the dramatic 100-meter Risco waterfall—two of the island's most photographed natural wonders.
Getting there and back
Which route
Where to board
Boarding reference: Funchal. Select a journey that names Vila da Calheta; check the route page for the correct direction and any branch notes. The town name alone does not identify a boarding bay.
From the stop
Vila da Calheta → Rabaçal — PR6 / PR6.1. The bus reaches the named town only. Arrange a taxi or tour transfer to the destination and a pickup back to the bus stop; do not treat the remaining road as a verified walking connection.
The way back
Agree the pickup location and return transport before starting. Leave room for the road transfer before your chosen bus; a through ticket or guaranteed connection is not established. Choose the last usable return on the route page before leaving. Use its dated timetable where available, otherwise its linked SIGA sheet. Match the day, direction and stop; a departure from the terminus is not a departure from your stop.
Good to know
- Agree the pickup location and return transport before starting. Leave room for the road transfer before your chosen bus; a through ticket or guaranteed connection is not established.
- The bus sources name stops, but do not establish a step-free walking route or the entrance location. Check the final approach and the return boarding point before leaving the bus.
Bus access does not establish whether a trail is accessible. Consult the official trail and reservation sources before setting out.
Choose the return transport before the walk; the route page carries the bus timetable and its source.
Visit Madeira — trail informationWhat to see at Rabaçal
The 25 Fontes trail (PR6) leads to a natural amphitheater with 25 springs cascading into a lagoon—about 4.5km one way. The Risco waterfall trail is shorter (about 30 min one way) and leads to a dramatic 100m cascade. The ancient laurisilva forest here is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The forestry house has basic facilities and picnic areas.
Best time to visit
Spring and early summer offer the best water flow and weather. Start early to avoid crowds and ensure you have time for the round trip. The trails can be slippery—wear proper hiking boots. Allow 4-5 hours for both trails combined.
